And it doesn't just flag them to you. You're whole corp enjoys open season on the thief, so you can set up some clever gank situations around cans or wrecks. Just having a mate in a tackler afk next to you will smell sufficiently like a trap to discourage most would-be can jackers. -------------- Civis Ascendant Sum |

I love 5 and have suggested it before. If you want to steal 20000 cubic meters of ore in a battleship with a 400 cubic meter drone bay, you should have to spend some serious time sitting there and doing it, with the flag activated when you take the first load. Can flagging laws are a good answer to haulers stealing ore, but they've been co-opted by ore thieves.
If you want to steal ore, you should have to do it in a battle badger and hope there's no gank. Risk and reward.

You can pump and jump, or you can jetcan mine, or you can mine into tiny secure cans. These are all viable options, they all have positive and negative aspects. I don't really see a problem with the current system.

Right there the fight's over. A fight that starts at a later time shouldn't enter into it. What were you thinking, letting him get away?

Ore theft is hardly risk-free with can-flagging. Bullying is often fairly safe, but if your whole corp can't muster the military might to repel an ore thief, then you dont' have the chops for jetcan mining. 5/10 complexes don't need to be nerfed because they can't be soloed in a Caracal.
Mining is not opting out of EvE, and it's not some kind of kindergarten playtime for children and cowards. Pirates like to say it is, and many miners like to think it is, but at the end of the day mining is a crucial element in a violent game world. Those minerals are precious, and they can't just be conjured from the air.
Safe 0.0 mining makes mineral prices low, so you've got to mine a whole lot to make any real money at it. That's a shame, but maybe it just means you shouldn't mine in empire. Nobody makes a living shooting 3,000-isk bounty rats, after all.
The idea that mining is some kind of newbie job that you do until you're ready to fight in EvE is a fallacy that's done harm to the game, just like the idea that you should be rewarded for destroying things.
The fundamental flaw in EvE is the duality of the "shoot things for fun" and the "build things to succeed" philosophy. It's possible to shoot things to succeed in eve, as well as for fun, so while everyone can have a good time destroying things and sustain that lifestyle indefinitely, production and cooperation can be entirely relegated to alts and sloves in 0.0 space with far more success than actually trying to inhabit the game world in any sincere way.
BoB figured it out first and that let them win EvE.
